Environmental and Business Economics Minor

Program objectives includes strengthening effectiveness in one’s personal and professional life by providing the basic foundation for addressing questions like

  1. How much time should I allocate to study versus leisure activities if I want a 3.0+ this semester?
  2. How may I determine my “market value” upon graduation?
  3. How can my company be environmentally responsible and remain competitive in the global economy?

The minor in Environmental & Business Economics (373)

is designed to help one answer the preceding questions and to achieve personal and career goals in a measured and responsible manner.  Whether our interests lie within business, government or other organizations, we are challenged to use scarce resources wisely and allocate them in ways to achieve the maximum satisfaction of our various goals.

The minor, open to all undergraduate students at Rutgers other than majors in the program, consists of 21-23 credits as follows:

*NOTE:  11:373:101 Economics, People, and Environment cannot substitute for the two semesters in micro- and macroeconomics, but these two courses will fulfill the “economic” portion of the school’s Area V requirement.

Plus one of the following:

Elective courses

selected from the list above are typically chosen according to one’s interests, major and career goals.  For example:

  1. To strengthen your understanding of “environmental policy issues,” when your major is Environmental Policy, Institutions, & Behavior (374), Environmental Sciences (375), or Natural Resource Management (704), electives selected typically include Land Economics, Environmental Economics, and Natural Resources Economics (one of which will have been taken as a “required course”).
  2. To strengthen your opportunity for a career in a “business” environment, if your major is one of the above or another such as Agricultural Science (017), Animal Science (067), Biotechnology (126), Computer Science (198), Environmental Planning & Design (573), Exercise Science & Sports Studies (377), Food Science (400), Nutritional Sciences (709), or Plant Science (766), then courses such as management, marketing, finance, and computer tools should be considered.

Admission

to the minor is fairly simple:

  1. Obtain a “Declaration of Minor” form from your school’s Office of Academic Affairs.  At Cook College, this office is in 205 Martin Hall.
  2. During the semester when you are completing requirements in the minor, complete the form and obtain the signature of the Undergraduate Program Director in EBE (Room 113, Cook Office Building,  55 Dudley Road, Cook College Campus).
  3. Add your signature and return the form to the academic affairs office designated on the form.
